If all you are looking for in a musical is stock characters, predictable storylines and samey boy band music than look no further than Loserville. The plot line follows the story of not-so subtly named “Michael Dork”. An all American high school geek in 1971, caught in the middle of the development of email. All the posters on the tube claim: “If you love Glee you’ll love Loserville!” This comparison is completely warranted. Whilst the overarching story is about the first email the minor plot lines follow the Glee standard of love triangles and misfits.
Based off the album “Welcome to Loserville” (2005) by Son of Dork this is not your standard jukebox musical. The writers only included 5 songs off the album and wrote another 5 of original soundtrack. It is nearly impossible to differentiate between the original music and the songs from the album. All the songs blur together in a mishmash of “Busted” pop, and none stand out as particular classics.
One of Loserville’s redeeming features is the way in which the set designers changed scenes. The use of cute quirky oversized notebook pages helped give the musical a comic book feel. This contrasted with what Elliot Davis – writer of the show – called “a motherboard of a set”. The stage looked like cyberdog had puked all over the stage. The harsh steel piping and fake cybernetic wiring was completely over the top and completely ruined the colourful “Archie Comic” effect that the art direction was going for.
In spite of everything it was a feel good (if not shallow) musical that guarantees you will be laughing, from the many, many Star Trek references to the adorable Lil’ Chris playing the light version of Sheldon Cooper. Loserville had some great one-liners and some seriously cringe worthy cheesy ones.
