IScreamSundays, the newest addition to Brixton Jamm’s collection of student-based events seemed like a brilliant idea. The launch party, an Alice in Wonderland themed rave exceptionally excited me, not to mention the promise of smoking caterpillars and rabbits with pocket watches. But, what was in theory an amazing night of fanciful illusion, turned out to be a disheartening night spent sipping overpriced pints in a half empty venue.

The main flaw probably lies in the fact that there was an anticipated occupancy of roughly 600 guests but there was only a turnout of a 100 or so, thus the management’s decision to close off the second room and the garden. This cancelled some of the promised activities such as the giant board games, circus acts, and the wide variety of performances advertised. The guests that did show up were left with nothing to do other than listen to a never ending string of commercial music. There were supposed to be eight DJ’s playing, but I could scarcely tell the difference if there was in fact one at all.

However, I must give credit where it is due: the dancers who performed a short number close to the end of the night were phenomenal. Without a doubt the highlight of the night, albeit shattering any childhood recollections of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ with a topless Alice and the Mad-Hatter attempting to look up the other dancers’ skirts. Nonetheless this was one of the most amusing and enjoyable things I have seen in a while.

All in all I wouldn’t recommend a visit, at least not in the near future.  As the event lacked publicity and therefore lacked the turnout which would be necessary to consider dragging yourself out of bed on a Sunday. Especially in light of the fact that a ticket is a tenner I would highly recommend that your Sunday evening drinks are retained in your local pub. It has to be said however, that IScreamSundays are in fact a brilliant idea to quash the Sundays blues, they just require a bit of work before they actually succeed.
