Each year we convince ourselves that we need a new coat, and now that the UK has been predicted to have the coldest winter since 1947, having a good jacket to snuggle up into at the tube station seems more vital than ever. However, being a student, finding a good quality jacket that will stay in style for most of the year can get a bit pricey. Times like these are where it’s particularly good to know where to grab yourself a good bargain, and being situated in one of the world’s fashion capitals, where would be a better place to do so than London?

Since the high street shops like Zara and Topshop definitely do not sell any for less than £60 it’s often difficult though to know where to get low priced coats. However, after having toured London I came across some fantastic places to get jackets for £30 and under! Here’s where I recommend:

MARKETS

One of my favorite things to do in London is to wander around different markets. Old Spitalfields market is open 7 days a week, and has several coat stands, offering styles of all kinds, from oversized boyfriend jackets to the timeless fur hooded parker. There has always been misconceptions surrounding the cheapness of faux fur, but faux fur now looks so real that designers such as Christian Siriano are even using it on the runway. Camden Town, one of London’s most famous markets, has a number of coat stalls as well – some of which are retailing jackets for between £20-£30.

ONLINE STORES

While you sit under your duvet and dread the bitterly cold journey to uni in the morning, there are a number of great online retailers to browse and find a bargain.  ASOS Marketplace sells clothes that are generally cheaper than on the usual site.  Some are second hand, and some are items being sold by independent boutique owners.

CHARITY SHOPS

Buying something from a charity shop is always a plus, because not only do you get a good bargain, but you help others out as well.  An interesting idea would be to exchange an old jacket from last year to buy a new one for this year! That way you can give and take.

Barnado’s is a lively charity shop in Brixton that I recently visited, which to my pleasant surprise was stocked with an abundance of gorgeous items, none which were more than £40. Here you could easily bag yourself a good winter coat for just £15.  Another charity shop that I would recommend is The Salvation Army on Deptford High Street, where you can once again find great jackets without having to cut into your weekly food budget.

HIGH STREET BRANDS

When you buy on the high street it feels awfully tempting to go browsing in the likes of Topshop, Zara, and River Island. However, other retailers such as TK Maxx, New Look and Primark also have a great deal of sales going on where you can find jackets for £20-£30. Also don’t forget to show your Goldsmiths student ID whenever you buy something, as you get 10% discount at most stores!

Finding a good quality coat for a decent price is easier than it seems, as there are so many more other options than you’d first think – so make sure you have a good snoop around before you settle on your coat for this seasons frost.
