When it comes to organising your Friday and Saturday nights out in London, the sheer amount of possibilities can leave you feeling dizzy. So, [smiths] magazine has digested what’s on offer this weekend (with your student budget in mind) and has constructed the best option for both nights so you don’t have to.
Oliver’s Jazz Bar
This venue really is terrific. Oliver’s is neatly tucked away in a small opening on Nevada St near Greenwich Park; once through the black gates, a door in the wall leads you into the small, low-roofed basement where you are greeted by the misty flow of live Jazz. This Friday plays host to Maciek Psyz a London based trio who have toured across Europe and the US. If you don’t want to pay entry to the live gig there’s a bar in the next room, which allows you to soak up the fantastic atmosphere for free.
Boasting one of the most impressive interiors in East London, Village Underground is as much an architectural spectacle as it is a nightclub. This Saturday they welcome world renowned DJ Juan Atkins to head the line-up but R&S record’s ‘Lone’ is the pick of the bunch here. His latest release ‘Airglow Fires’ from late last year is quite simply stunning; a chance to hear it played out live by the man himself is not one to pass up. Okay, so this is a little more expensive, but paying £12 to go to one of London’s best clubs on a Saturday night isn’t all that bad. Just go for Sainsbury’s basics cream cheese instead of Philadelphia and you’ll make that £12 back easy.
