WTTW third instalment from our music subeditor Patrick Heardman
The Crate, Hackney Wick
This is one of London’s most exciting new venues. The Crate, with its excellent industrial interior crafted using reclaimed materials from around the Wick, also has its own on-site brewery producing their very own CRATE Lager, Golden Ale, India Pale Ale, Best Bitter and new CRATE Stout. They also have their own authentic stone pizza oven. Situated right on the canal this is the perfect setting for a Friday evening drink whilst your ears are being treated by their reliably excellent weekend DJs. Music wise its disco, funky, house, soul.
Entry – Free
Floating Points, Plastic People
Plastic People is my favourite club in London. It was under threat of closing down back in 2010 when police complained it was causing ‘public nuisance’ in the streets. Backed by resident DJs and regulars the club survived and is going stronger than ever today. This tiny underground venue boasts simply the best sound system in London, period. You won’t find anywhere to rival the complementary acoustics of the tight and intimate setting, which results in a beautiful crisp and clean sound. A neuroscientist by day and classically trained composer/DJ by night, floating points is one of the country’s most exciting new prospects and a resident at Plastic People. The regularity of his appearances here don’t make them any less special however; the guy is unstoppable, fresh from last weekend’s performance at Four Tet curated at Brixton’s O2 Academy he is sure to impress.
Entry – £10
Fancy something a local and a little less expensive?
The Albany, Deptford
This weekend on the 29th, the main stage at Deptford’s Albany Theatre plays host to ‘Amplify’ an eclectic music night programmed and produced in collaboration with special guest artists. Headlining collaborators include Chunky (Swamp 81, Hessle Audio), Blue Daisy, Micall Parknsun, Planas, and MAD Lean. The roundhouse structure of the theatre makes the Albany a truly unique space in the South East as it spearheads Deptford’s current artistic and cultural movement. The event offers discount entry for U21s and students.
Entry – £6 (students)
