If you’re considering a European music festival this summer, then look no further. The guaranteed sunshine on Croatia’s magical coastline has proved a perfect setting for festivalgoers wanting to escape the drab British weather. Starting back in 2008, Soundwave set the trend for more recent Croatian arrivals in the form of Dimensions in 2012 and Unknown in 2013, but as one of the first on the scene, Soundwave are well versed in throwing a good party. Whether you want to go for a dip in the beautiful Adriatic Sea, seek shelter in hammocks among the trees or take a boat out to absorb the breathtaking Kornati Islands, you’re never short of a tropical adventure in Tisno. Described by Time Out London as being ‘praised to the skies by the big names in the media’, it’s no surprise that the festival keeps going from strength to strength. Musically, you can expect a diversity, which does not specify in any particular genre; fans of dub, soul, house, reggae and hip-hop will be equally satisfied.
Given its title as a ‘boutique’ festival, Soundwave is on the small side where around three thousand ‘soon-to-be-friends and artists’ come together to have the time of their lives over the course of a four-day, sun-kissed weekend. The nearby towns of Tisno, Zadar and Split are as interesting as they are named and play host to the nightly after parties where the fun goes on into the early hours of the morning. The festival provides transport in the form of buses, which only take 10-15 minutes, not long to wait for the dancing to recommence.
In recent times, Croatia and the tranquil coast of Tisno in particular, has been the site of a small music revolution. Were you to walk along this shore ten years ago, you would find a peaceful fishing town. Now playing host to Soundwave among others, it is one of the most popular festival sites on the planet and has firmly booked its place in the European festival calendar. In 2012 Croatia reportedly had 11.8 million tourists, a figure which broke its all time record. This was surpassed again in 2013 with numbers in excess of 14 million wanting a piece of the Mediterranean at a competitively low price. This surge owes a lot to the pull of the world-renowned acts that these recent festivals showcase, and Soundwave in particular for inspiring the migration of the British festival market.
This year, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Madlib, Mr Scruff and Gold Panda head up the Soundwave main stage and are supported by many more established and up and coming artists from around the globe. Don’t miss out on one of the hottest festivals on the calendar.
