Fashion is an industry with a manicured finger firmly pressed on the refresh button, constantly recycling old styles and reworking them into something new. It’s safe to say that Goldsmiths culture is prolific in its experimentation with dipping in and out of different styles. A mix and match of clothing defined by previous decades amalgamated into an exciting hybrid of old meets new. We wanted to celebrate this indulgent marriage of thrift and contemporary by reviewing various ‘Thrift’ stores around the local vicinity, starting off with Beyond Retro, a chain thrift store nestled in the heart of Brick Lane. The beady-eyed Shaianne Hugh and camera snapper Nastasia Alexandru dived in to give the store a good ol’ rummage.

Beyond Retro have definitely got it right with tapping into our generations’ nostalgic approach to fashion, creating a shopping experience perfectly tailored to appease our obsession with all things thrifty. It’s become one the most organised thrift shops on the London thrifting frontline. Everything is catalogued by type, colour and decade keeping chaotic riffling to a minimum. With a huge collection of basic items, from fur coats to denim shorts, it’s so easy to spot whatever it is that you’re looking for. If you’ve been on a lifelong hunt for that perfect vintage leather jacket, you can find them in abundance at Beyond Retro with a complementary side of plaid shirts, a rainbow of graphic tees and so much more.
Warming us up for the festive season, the store has the most unbelievable collection of ugly Christmas jumpers you’ve ever seen, guaranteed to help you win the prize in the Christmas novelty jumper contest and out-do granny on the knitwear front.
Not only is Beyond Retro a hotspot for the coolest vintage garms, they also have their own line of reworked vintage materials, such as refurbished denim jackets that have been blinged out with colourful jewels and patches, as well as unique skirts and quirky jumpers. The collection takes something old and reworks it by hand into something funky.
Overall, Beyond Retro is a celestial experience for those obsessed with vintage shopping, especially for those who look to past decades for style inspiration. It is a huge warehouse filled with treasures and it’s impossible to leave feeling unsatisfied.
